When it comes to finger fractures - see an expert early! We will choose the best course of treatment to get your finger back moving safely & quickly.
A fracture is a break in the normal continuity of the bone.
Finger fractures often result from high impact force to the finger, commonly seen in sporting & work injuries. They can also occur during a finger joint dislocation, where a tendon which bends or straightens the finger can pull with it a little chunk of bone when it is forcefully moved. This is often seen when a finger is bent backwards suddenly when hit by a ball.
A fractured finger will be swollen, bruised and painful to move.
It is recommended to have a suspected finger fracture assessed early by x-ray. Depending upon the location and severity of the fracture, an operation may be required to fix to bones together. We work with your surgeon, or read your x-ray to determine how to position the finger for it to heal in the best position for movement and use.
A custom made splint for your finger / hand is usually made to help hold it still as the bones heal. Splints which are custom made by an experienced hand physio, hand OT or hand therapist should provide the best fit and position to support healing. We also focus on managing your pain and swelling symptoms so that you can back to moving and using your finger as quickly as possible.
We make recommendations for you to regain movement and strength when the healing allows. And let you know how to best protect your finger as it heals during use in sporting and work activities.
Specialist early management of fractured fingers will help you get the best outcome, and also help prevent possible complications such as bent joints in the future.
